SCULPTING EMOTION AND FORM: A JOURNEY THROUGH CLAYCLARE PALMER

CLARE PALMER

Clare Palmer’s work is deeply rooted in the personal, exploring themes of emotional impact, mental processes, and resilience. She creates abstract sculptures through two main forms: handbuilt wall sculptures and wheel-thrown sculptural vessels. Each piece reflects an internal narrative, evolving from a written exploration of an emotional experience. Her process is a blend of meditative focus and a push against clay’s physical constraints, seeking to defy gravity, create tension, and evoke a deceptive fragility in her work.

A graduate of the City Lit Ceramics Diploma, Clare’s journey into ceramics came after a career in advertising. Now, working from her London studio, she crafts with both porcelain and stoneware, combining textured slabs and thrown forms to create intricate, abstract pieces. Subtle use of oxides, stains, and glazes enhance her sculptures, adding depth and tonal variation, while reflecting the emotional narratives that drive her practice.

'MY WORK IS AN EXPLORATION OF EMOTIONAL STATES - SCULPTURAL VESSELS THAT EMBODY BOTH STRUGGLE AND STRENGTH, CRAFTED FROM THE RAWNESS OF CLAY.'

Clare’s sculptures are more than mere objects; they are expressions of lived experience, with each form standing as a physical manifestation of emotional states. Her handbuilt pieces and sculptural vessels, created from both porcelain and stoneware, embody a delicate balance of tension and release, defying the constraints of the material and pushing boundaries to create something profound.
