DESCRIPTION

This series by Mimi, inspired by the chapter 'A Lot of Goodnights' from the book 'In Watermelon Sugar', captures her ongoing fascination with the moon and its symbolic connection to her Korean heritage. As a Korean artist in London, she feels a deep connection to the Moon Jar, anancient Korean art form that made its way to the West, resonating with Mimi’s own journey from Korea to the UK and symbolizing the movement of culture and identity across borders.

This piece particularly made for House of QRA features Mimi’s reinterpretation of the traditional Moon Jar renowned for its delicate white porcelain and near-perfect roundness. However, Mimi departs from tradition by infusing her creation with subtle color and texture, reflecting the moon’s silver hue as seen from Venus. Through the use of pearl and silver lustres, she imbues the surfaces with a soft, glowing translucence, allowing layers of color to emerge gently beneath. As you place the piece in different places, you'll notice a color change in the yellow.

The piece is crafted using her unique method of handwritten porcelain slip, coiled and built up into forms that echo the moon’s surface. The text, drawn from the short chapter, repeats throughout the series, creating a rhythmic flow across the vessels. Her technique plays with a delicate appearance while surprising with robustness at the same time.
