EMBRACING IMPERFECTIONS WITH TACTILE CERAMICS

Marea Hildebrand

Marea is captivated by the elegant, humble aesthetics found in Japanese and Korean ceramic art, particularly the Wabi-Sabi philosophy's celebration of transience and imperfection. This inspiration is woven into her tactile surfaces, reminiscent of textiles and wood carvings, and her deliberate embrace of the coil-building process, which she calls "clay time."

Marea is a highly acclaimed ceramic artist based in Zurich with a multi-faceted background. She holds a BA in Art Education with a focus on design and an MA in Transdisciplinarity Studies from Zurich University of the Arts. Her journey with ceramics began after a career in painting and textiles, and she has quickly established herself as a rising talent in the field. Alongside her artistic practice, she directs the international education program "School of Commons," dedicated to peer learning in the arts.

'CLAY TIME IS A TRANSFORMATIVE PROCESS WHERE WAITING BECOMES CREATION, SHAPING BOTH THE ARTWORK AND THE RHYTHM OF LIFE.'

Each piece by Marea is a testament to the beauty of imperfection. Her coiled forms, often crafted from local clays and finished with slip glazes, possess a quiet strength and a serene presence. The deliberate imperfections and textured surfaces invite touch and contemplation, encouraging viewers to connect with the artwork on a deeper level.
