SCULPTING THE INTERSECTION OF MATERIAL, MEMORY AND IMAGINATION

Lucy Whitford

Lucy is fascinated by the inherent qualities of materials—their textures, histories, and hidden potentials. She draws inspiration from the everyday world, from the objects we encounter in our homes to the industrial structures that shape our cities.

A graduate with distinction (Masters in Fine Art) from Chelsea College of Arts, Lucy has garnered acclaim for her multidisciplinary practice, which encompasses sculptural installation and ceramics. She works from her home studio in London, where she has developed a practice centered on clay’s rich materiality and its connections to human stories of fragility, strength, and tenderness.

‘THE ORGANIC FORMS FOUND IN MY WORK ARE STUDIES OF HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS AND MOVEMENT - SCULPTURAL VIGNETTES, MOMENTS, POEMS TOLD THROUGH CLAY.’

Lucy’s sculptural works are a testament to the power of transformation. Through a combination of intuition and meticulous craftsmanship, she pushes clay, plaster, foam, steel, and concrete beyond their conventional limits. The resulting sculptures are both familiar and unsettling, inviting viewers to question their assumptions about the world around them.
